Dr Tan graduated from University of Malaya in 1982 and obtained her Master of Anaesthesiology from the same university in 1991. After five years of working as an anaesthesiologist in Sultanah Aminah Hospital, she went to Queen Elizabeth Medical Centre in Birmingham to pursue a one year fellowship training in intensive care. Since her return to Malaysia, she has been working as the Head of Intensive Care Unit (ICU) in Sultanah Aminah Hospital till retirement in 2017. She is currently an adjunct Associate Professor in Newcastle University Medicine Malaysia.
Her achievements have been many. Among them are:
She organised the intensive care unit with protocols and guidelines. She continually educated specialists, medical officers, medical assistants and nurses through bedside teaching, courses, seminars, and workshops in intensive care. She also expanded the number of intensive care beds from 12 to 29. The ICU standard mortality ratio is among the lowest in the country.
She was one of the Committee members who set up the Malaysian Registry of Intensive Care, previously known as National Audit on Intensive Care Units. The Registry helped the Ministry of Health improve the intensive care services in the country.
She formed the Malaysian Society of Intensive Care in 2009 and was President till 2017. With this position, she established contacts and collaboration with intensivists in the Asia Pacific region. Through this collaboration, intensivists in the region came to Malaysia to run courses and workshop for our health care personnel. Collaborative research was carried out and four research papers on Sepsis, Sedation and Withdrawal Therapy in ICU were published in international journals.
She headed the National Specialist Register Subcommittee for Intensive Care since it was started in 2008. She was the chairperson for this Subcommittee till retirement
She was actively involved in the battle against dengue infection. Together with the infectious disease physician, she regularly conducted dengue management courses to all the junior doctors in all the hospitals in the state of Johor. She also sat in the State Dengue Mortality Meeting and was one of the investigators for dengue studies.
She started the Basic Life Support Course in 1991 and the Advanced Life Support Course in 2001 in Sultanah Aminah Hospital. These courses have been conducted regularly since then. The National Committee on Resuscitation Training (NCORT) of which she was one of the founding members drafted the Policy for Resuscitation Training for the Ministry in Feb 2009. She headed the Advanced Life Support Subcommittee which conducted Instructor's Course regularly and produced the Training Manual for Provider for the whole country.
